What is a Static IP Address?

In fact, they are essential for hosting websites, running e-mail servers, security allowlisting, and providing remote access services. Businesses/organizations that need to communicate globally often depend on static IP addresses to maintain a fixed identity.

What is a Dynamic IP Address?

A dynamic IP address is a temporary internet number that automatically changes each time a device connects to a network. It is temporarily assigned to a device through Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).

Most of the office and home network uses dynamic IP addresses as it simplifies network management and makes efficient use of IPv4 address space. The limited availability of static IP addresses within the IPv4 framework is the primary reason for widespread adoption of dynamic IP addresses.

For example: When you connect your device, be it laptop or a smartphone to a home network, your internet connection can automatically assign IP address to the device.

  • Remote access is significantly easier as users can easily locate and connect to a device using a static IP address.
  • It becomes much easier to implement security measures, such as firewalls and access controls.
  • A static IP can provide more consistent location information for services that use an IP address to estimate a user’s geographic location. 

Limitations 

Despite the benefits, a static IP address has certain limitations as well:

  • These addresses are assigned to specific devices, which can further limit your ability to connect to different devices.
  • When your network infrastructure changes, like replacing a router or move to a different network, you may need to modify static IP settings manually on each device.
  • You need to set it up manually and troubleshooting can be more complicated when something goes wrong.
  • Static IP addresses increase the risk of a device being hacked. In fact, they also make it more difficult to change IP addresses, making the business more susceptible to issues.  

Advantages and Limitations of Dynamic IP Address

Advantages

  • The DHCP server automatically assigns dynamic IP addresses, making initial configuration simpler for the users.
  • DHCP automatically manages assigning and reusing IP addresses, making it convenient for networks handling with devices.
  • It is a cost-effective option for most users
  • Devices can either join or leave the network easily as the IP addresses are assigned automatically for a specific duration.
  • When the network infrastructure changes, the dynamic IP address updates automatically, reducing the need for manual changes.

Limitations

  • Accessing the internet from the devices on a different network  can be challenging due to frequent changes in IP address making it difficult for remote access to a network.
  • It is less suitable for hosting servers and websites because the IP address can change.
  • Users have limited control over the IP address assigned to their devices which results in occasional connectivity issues.
  • Organisations using dynamic IPs may need additional ways to provide secure access for remote workers, as the IP address changes often. 

Conclusion 

Choosing the right IP address relies on your network requirements and how you use your internet connection. A static IP address can be a better option for businesses, remote access, server hosting, VPNs, and other applications that require a consistent network address. In contrast, a dynamic IP address is suitable for home users and everyday internet activities where a fixed address is not necessary.
